Finding Connection in the Midst of Travel

Traveling alone can feel isolating, even in the busiest cities, surrounded by lights, noise, and people. I recently had the opportunity to accompany someone on an extended business trip, and it reminded me of how essential true connection can be.
He was an accomplished professional, someone who juggles significant responsibilities daily. His calendar was packed with meetings and deadlines, and his evenings were often filled with client dinners. But underneath the surface of his confidence and composure, there was a quiet exhaustion. He admitted early on that what he missed most during these trips wasn’t just home. It was the feeling of being seen, heard, and valued for more than the roles he played.

Each evening, we carved out a space for something he hadn’t had in years: the chance to just be himself. Sometimes that meant sharing a quiet dinner in his hotel room, where he could shed the weight of the day without needing to entertain anyone. Other times, it was taking a walk through the city streets, sharing stories about his family and his childhood.
What struck me most was how much he opened up. In his everyday life, there were few opportunities for this kind of vulnerability. He talked about his dreams, his fears, and the pressures of always needing to be “the strong one.” I listened, offering my full attention, and it was as though the walls he’d built around himself began to come down.
By the end of our time together, I noticed a profound change. The weight in his voice was lighter; the lines on his face, softer. On our last evening, as we reflected on the week, he told me something I’ll never forget: “You made me feel like I wasn’t alone for the first time in a long time.”
Moments like these are why I do what I do. It’s not just about offering companionship. It is about creating a sanctuary, even in the midst of a hectic business trip. Sometimes, the most profound gift we can give is simply letting someone be seen for who they truly are. This gentleman lovingly allowed me to share his experience with you all in the hope I may also provide that sanctuary for you.
Much love,
Kira xx
